A village trip to Mothabaneng – a local village not far from Tuli Safari Lodge – adds another dimension of cultural tourism to our wildlife tourism. This is an enriching experience for guests and helps the government of Botswana to achieve its objective of diversifying tourism. Culture is about our way of life, our history, the food we eat and our attire … one can experience all these and more when visiting Mothabaneng.
Meet a village headman or village councillor to learn about the history of the village and the entire Tuli Block Region. Hear about the kgotla system (a public meeting, community council or traditional law court in a Botswana village) which was used by the chiefs before Botswana gained independence in 1966 and is still very much in use today.
A guided tour led by the village chief together with your Tuli Safari Lodge guide to the ancient rock paintings on the outskirts of the villages overlooking the Motloutse River is something extraordinary.
Then wrap up your trip with a visit to Tsatsi le Dule Basket Group to witness creative local ladies making traditional crafts – floor mats, baskets, hand bags and place mats – from the indigenous Palm tree. Why not get yourself one traditional craft and take it with you to your native country and show support to the local community of Mothabaneng village?
