Getting to Tuli

Tuli Safari Lodge is located in the Northern Tuli Game Reserve in the easternmost corner of Botswana, where the country meets South Africa and Zimbabwe. Please note that on some maps it is marked Mashatu Game Reserve.

Tuli can be approached from either Botswana or South Africa (the lodge is just 10 minutes drive from Pontdrift border post). You can self-drive, or we can help arrange a road transfer or you can fly in to Limpopo Valley Airfield (also a short drive from the lodge). We can help organise flights via a semi-regular scheduled service (currently only available from Johannesburg) or as a private charter (this can be quite cost effective if there are several passengers). There are also twice-daily flights from Johannesburg to Polokwane, from where you can self-drive or have a road transfer for the final 2 hour journey to Tuli. Please see details for each option below.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Please note that the Botswana border authorities do not accept temporary passports. If you are travelling to Tuli with children, please note that both the Botswana and South African border authorities require parents to provide certified copies of their children’s full unabridged birth certificates. If a child is travelling with one parent, with another adult or unaccompanied, the parent or parents who are not present will need to provide an affidavit giving consent for the child to travel.

  • Self-drive: Please always contact the lodge prior to travel in order to check on the status of local rivers. GPS coordinates: S 22 12 842 E 29 05 687. Tuli Safari Lodge is around 5 hours drive from Johannesburg and around 6 hours drive from Gaborone. Please see our detailed Directions. When the Limpopo River is not crossable at Pontdrift, guests may leave their vehicles at the border post on the South African side and cross to Botswana using a passenger cable car (please note that an additional cost of BWP50 per person per crossing is levied by a third party operator for this service). Your Tuli Safari Lodge guide will meet you on the South African side and assist you. IMPORTANT NOTE FOR GUESTS DRIVING TO TULI FROM SA … please ensure you have a copy of your vehicle registration papers with you to present to the border officials on the South African side of the border crossing. If you have hired a vehicle, please ask the rental company to provide you with a copy of the vehicle’s papers as well as a letter confirming the car hire. This is especially important for those leaving their vehicle on the SA side of the border at Pont Drift where the officials have become very strict and will not permit guests to cross the border or leave their vehicle on the SA side if they do not have these papers on hand.
  • Road transfers: We can help you to arrange road transfers from Johannesburg, Polokwane, Gaborone or other locations. Please contact us for more information. Please note that we use third parties to provide road transfers and therefore cannot be held responsible for any rate changes or problems with their service.
  • Arriving by air: There are several options for getting to Tuli by air.

The Limpopo Valley Air Taxi from Johannesburg into Limpopo Valley Airfield (short drive from the lodge) is available daily. Rates US$930 return or US$715 single – for more info click here and also see Fly-in special.

Limpopo Valley Airfield is ideally located as a hub for tourism in southern Africa, being mid-way between the Kruger and the Okavango Delta, mid-way between Johannesburg and Chobe, and mid-way between the Mozambique coast and the Okavango Delta. Information and costs for the Maun/LVA route is available here with other routes quotable on a charter basis.

SA Airlink also operates several flights a day from OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg to Polokwane (Pietersberg). Depending on your itinerary, you can then hire a car and drive to the lodge (approx 2 hours) or we can help you to arrange for a road transfer.

Alternatively, we can help you to organise a charter flight to Limpopo Valley Airfield (GPS coordinates: S22 11 21 E 290737. The runway is 1500m long and has a tarmac surface). Please contact us for more details on these options.

Please note that Tuli Safari Lodge cannot be held responsible for any rate changes or problems with these third party services.
